Elkhart County Auto Parts Plant Closes…

ELKHART, Ind. (AP) _ A northern Indiana auto parts plant that had been slated to close in early 2013 has shuttered its doors weeks ahead of schedule, leaving more 125 workers jobless.

Gunite Corporation shuttered its Elkhart plant Friday following months of falling revenue and orders for wheel components caused by an excess inventory in the trucking industry.

Spokesman Timothy Weir for Evansville-based parent company Accuride Corporation says the company has been battered by inexpensive overseas competition. Company officials announced in July the Elkhart plant would end operations in early 2013 and move its manufacturing operations to Rockford, Illinois.

When the plant closing was announced, the company had 210 employees.

Weir says five salaried employees were able to transfer to other properties within Accuride.
