INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – A longtime Republican state senator will not seek re-election after being diagnosed with lung cancer.
 
Sen. Sue Landske of Cedar Lake announced Thursday she will retire at the end of her term this year. She announced in November that she had been diagnosed with cancer and was beginning treatments at a Chicago hospital.
 
Senate President Pro Tem David Long told senators Wednesday that Landske has asked to be excused for most of the session but hopes to return to the Statehouse before the Legislature's scheduled adjournment in mid-March.
 
Landske was first elected to the Senate in 1984 and represents Lake, Benton and Newton counties in northwestern Indiana. She authored legislation in 2010 that changed the redistricting process and another measure in 2011 to help women find careers in engineering.
