Indiana Landmarks Honors Butler for Hinkle Restoration

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Butler University's $36.2 million restoration of Hinkle Fieldhouse is being recognized by a statewide preservation group.

Indiana Landmarks has chosen Butler as the winner of its annual Cook Cup for Outstanding Restoration for its preservation of the National Historic Landmark.

Hinkle Fieldhouse was designed in 1928 and has hosted graduations, addresses by six U.S. presidents, basketball games and an indoor track meet in the 1930s at which Jesse Owens set a world record. It was the site of Indiana's single-class high school basketball championship and was featured in the movie “Hoosiers.''

The restoration completed last year included repairs to masonry and windows, removal of offices and concession stands and renovations to the gym, locker rooms and training areas.

The award will be presented April 25.
