Few women recognized on Indiana infrastructure

(Indiana)

INDIANAPOLIS (AP): Indiana has ramped up efforts in recent years to name dozens of state bridges and highways after famous Americans, but the amount of infrastructure honoring men far outnumber those honoring women.

After reviewing about 180 state memorial bridges and highways, The (Fort Wayne) Journal Gazette found that 143 men were honored, compared with five women. The newspaper determined that 33 were named for groups, such as veterans of specific wars, while a few others highlighted an area’s local history.

Over 50 of the people who have infrastructure named after them are elected officials and 45 of them are military members.

The co-president of the League of Women Voters of Indiana says the lack of female representation is the result of women’s late entry into the electoral system and military service.
