FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO) – The Fort Wayne Police Department is temporarily suspending the use of a specific neck restraint technique.

Fort Wayne’s NBC reports a memo sent to department personnel says they’re suspending the “Lateral Vascular Neck Restraint”, or LVNR, unless “deadly force conditions are present.”

The memo then went on to specify deadly force justification as “someone who poses a threat of serious bodily injury/death or the prevention of a forcible felony.”

The suspension comes after a FWPD lieutenant had a medical emergency during training Monday.

The FWPD later released a statement on the suspension:

“The Fort Wayne Police Department shall continue to strive in making public safety, as well as officer safety, a priority. Understanding that both defensive tactics training and real world application of force have a certain level of risk attached, we will continue to strive to mitigate any unnecessary risk to the public or our officers.”
