Acid Spill Injures Five at Indiana Rolls-Royce Plant

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Fire officials say a chemical spill has injured five people at a Rolls-Royce plant on Indianapolis' west side.

Capt. Mike Pruitt of the Wayne Township Fire Department says six people were exposed to nitric acid in a spill that produced a chemical cloud inside the building about 1:30 p.m. Friday.

He says five of those people were taken to local hospitals in stable condition. Pruitt says fire officials have had no reports of life-threatening injuries due to the spill.

Pruitt says the department initially received a report of an explosion at the plant that's near Indianapolis International Airport. The building has been evacuated and Pruitt says fire crews were preparing to enter the plant to assess the situation.

Rolls-Royce has research facilities and an aircraft engine factory in Indianapolis.
