GE Confirms Decision to Close Facilities in Fort Wayne

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): Friday afternoon, leaders with General Electric confirmed their plans to close a testing lab at their legacy site, impacting about 28 employees. They also announced they’ll be moving forward with closing their Executive Center, impacting 62 workers. The earliest employees would be effected is January 27, 2015.

According to a statement issued by the company, the decision was made after completing a 60-day decision bargaining period and after careful consideration of union proposals.

“Throughout the bargaining process we answered the union leadership’s questions and described Fort Wayne’s difficult competitive situation. The proposals submitted by the unions fell well short of the savings and efficiencies that would be generated by the proposed actions.”

They say by consolidating their commercial operations, technologies and lab into our manufacturing base, they’ll enable the business to be more cost-competitive and more responsive and proactive for customers.

Affected employees will receive comprehensive severance packages that include outplacement services, compensation based on years of service and other benefits.
