FORT WAYNE, IND. (WOWO) As extreme cold and snow are forecast across the region, Indiana Michigan Power is advising customers on ways to stay safe while managing energy costs. The utility says crews have strengthened the electrical system with smart technology, equipment upgrades, and proactive tree trimming, reducing customer outages by nearly 50 percent over the past five years.
Heating systems work harder during sub-zero temperatures, which can increase energy bills even if thermostats remain unchanged. I&M recommends keeping thermostats at a consistent, comfortable temperature, adding layers such as sweaters and blankets, and sealing exterior doors with rolled towels to prevent heat loss.
The utility warns against using space heaters, which pose fire risks and can add more than $60 a month in energy costs, and never to use stoves or ovens as a heat source. Customers are encouraged to sign up for text or email alerts, update contact information in online accounts, and monitor real-time energy use to help control costs.
“I&M employees are ready to respond quickly and safely to outages during winter storms,” the company said. “We encourage customers to reach out about bill assistance options and take steps to manage energy use safely during extreme cold.”
