City of Fort Wayne closes loophole on historic districts

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): It will be harder for owners to remove their property off the historic district.

Fort Wayne’s Historic Preservation Commission closed a loophole in the state law that allows cities to remove properties from the local historic districts. Now, any owner who attempts to get a property off the district will have to wait at least a year before trying again, according to the News-Sentinel.

“Historic preservation staff and surrounding property owners could be burdened by repeated requests for what amounts to what has already been decided,” city spokeswoman Rachel Blakeman said to the News-Sentinel.

The owner of the Frank Lloyd Wright house sought to remove his property off the district in May and again in July.
