MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. (AP) – An Indiana community plans to beef up safety along Lake Michigan.

The (Munster) Times reports Michigan City’s lakefront safety committee plans to install 25 life rings along the lakefront. Each one is 100 feet of rope tethered to a ring.

Michigan City Mayor Ron Meer says the rings can be tossed to struggling swimmers if there’s an emergency.

The community’s lakefront safety committee was created last year after a man drowned.
The safety improvements are being funded through a $13,000 grant from the Arcelor Mittal Foundation.
