Crash in Mercer County, one dead and another injured

MERCER COUNTY, Ind. (WOWO) – Mercer County Sheriff Jeff Grey reports his office is investigating a fatal crash that occurred around 8:17 a.m. Tuesday.

His office received numerous 911 calls reporting a multi-vehicle crash at the intersection of State Route 19 and State Route 118 North.

A preliminary investigation revealed the driver of a 2008 Kia was northbound on Burkettsville – St. Henry Road.

The driver stopped for the stop sign at State Route 19, but failed to yield the right of way and proceeded into the intersection, colliding with a westbound 2001 Freightliner.

The Freightliner was being driven by 57-year-old Charles W Ward of St. Mary’s, Ohio.

Ward’s semi overturned and slid broad side down the roadway, where it was struck again by an eastbound 2018 Volvo.

Sheriff Grey reported that the driver of the Kia and Ward were transported to Mercer Health in Coldwater, where Ward died from his injuries.

The driver of the Kia is currently being treated at Mercer Health.

The Volvo driver was released at the scene.

At this time, the crash still remains under investigation.
