Decatur Begins to Collect Sandbags

DECATUR, Ind. (WOWO): As flood waters recede in Adams County. Officials there are now beginning clean-up.

That includes sandbags. The city of Decatur will begin collecting them up Saturday morning. They are asking for volunteers to help with the effort. If you want sand for landscaping, they are making it available too.

From the City of Decatur:

The city of Decatur will pick up sandbags at Decatur homes, businesses and churches beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday.
Those with sandbags must call the EMA office at 724-5320 with name, address and phone number to be eligible for this service. Someone must be at the property at the time of pick up.

This service will be available on a first-call, first-serve basis.
We will not take appointments. If you do not call or are not home at pickup time, sandbags will not be removed from your property, according to a news release.

Volunteers needed
The city is asking for volunteers to help with sandbag pick up Saturday in Decatur and the surrounding area.

Pick up will begin at 8 a.m. at the Decatur street garage, 809 Elm St. Contact the Adams County EMA prior to volunteering if you or your group is interested.

Volunteers are encouraged to wear appropriate clothing, shoes and gloves for the task. Volunteers should be able to lift the 30-40-pound sandbags.

Want sand?
Residents in Decatur and the surrounding area needing sand for ponds, fill, gardens, etc. may also contact the EMA. The city will deliver the filled sandbags to you but will not redistribute them on your property.
