Elkhart Police Involved in Fatal Shooting

ELKHART, Ind. (WOWO): ELKHART, Ind. (AP): Authorities say a man was fatally shot by police officers when he pointed a gun at them while they were trying to arrest him.

State police Sgt. Trent Smith says Elkhart city police officers were searching for 32-year-old Joseph Lee because he was wanted on a felony arrest warrant from St. Joseph County. Smith says Lee fled an apartment Tuesday night as officers approached, trying to run away in the apartment complex.

Smith says seven officers were involved in the shooting, but didn't immediately release details. No officers were injured.

WNDU-TV and WSBT-TV report Lee faced aggravated battery charges that he shot a 16-year-old boy in the face Saturday in Mishawaka. Police say Lee fired shots at the teen and his older brother, who is married to Lee's ex-girlfriend.
