ELKHART, Ind. (AP): A northern Indiana sheriff beset by high employee turnover wants local officials to lift a pay freeze so he can keep workers and avoid cutting services.



Elkhart County Sheriff Brad Rogers says low wages in his department have prompted employees to leave for jobs at factories, fast food restaurants and other law enforcement departments. He blames a 2008 decision to freeze raises that made his department's wages among the lowest in the region.



The Elkhart Truth reports the county council has approved raises for corrections officers and patrol officers. Rogers is still crafting a pay structure before requesting raises for senior employees and other positions.
