EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) – Evansville officials ask residents and businesses to conserve water for the next several days because of cold Ohio River temperatures and numerous water main breaks around the city.
 
Officials say the city water treatment plant's reservoirs were only 40 percent capacity Thursday and warned a further reduction could lead to a citywide boil advisory.
 
Utility director Allen Mounts tells The Evansville Courier & Press that the Ohio River temperature was about 37 degrees Thursday, and the treatment plant isn't able to effectively clean impurities when water is that cold.
 
Mounts said the problem has been made worse by many water main breaks this week as temperatures fell below zero.
 
The utility says residents could notice low water pressure but that it remains safe to drink.
