INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – The former director of a central Indiana child-welfare office is accused of lying to a federal grand jury investigating a high school counselor who's charged with sexually exploiting students.
Federal officials say 58-year-old Michael Fleming of New Castle was arrested Tuesday on counts of perjury and making a false statement.
Fleming had been director of the Indiana Department of Child Services' New Castle office.
Court documents say Fleming told a grand jury last month he'd never heard complaints of alleged misconduct by Darrell Hughes, a New Castle school counselor charged with sexually exploiting male students.
Fleming was fired Feb. 24 by DCS for allegedly urging a subordinate to make false statements in the Hughes investigation.
The charges say Fleming told that employee after testifying he'd “told a little white lie.”
