INDIANAPOLIS, IND. (WOWO) Indiana ranks 20th in the nation for deaths caused by drowsy driving, recent data shows. Edward A. Smith, managing attorney at AutoAccident.com, provides several tips to prevent fatigue-related crashes.
Drivers should watch for warning signs of drowsiness, including frequent yawning, difficulty keeping eyes open, drifting from lanes, or missing exits. If these symptoms occur, they should find a safe place to rest immediately. Smith cautions that quick fixes such as caffeine or opening windows offer only temporary alertness. The only effective remedy is proper sleep.
He also advises checking prescription and over-the-counter medications for drowsiness warnings and avoiding driving if affected. A 20-minute power nap can significantly improve alertness on long trips, and adults should aim for 7 to 9 hours of sleep before driving, especially during peak travel periods.
“Drowsy driving poses a serious risk on any roadway, but especially on rural highways and long-distance routes,” Smith said. “No destination is worth risking your life or the lives of others on the road.”
