Extra Patrols for Clinton

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): One of the area's most dangerous roadways is getting a closer look by police.

Indiana State Police troopers are kicking off an enforcement campaign focused on Clinton Street between Coliseum and Coldwater.

ISP spokesman Ron Galaviz says they'll have extra patrols and checkpoints on the stretch of roadway.

He says they hope to impact positive changes in dangerous driving behaviors.

When we are there whether we have cars pulled over or not, (when) people see police cars they are already modifying their behavior. They doing what we were asking, called voluntary compliance. “Oh, I better watch my speed. Oh, I better slip my seat belt on.”

Galaviz says they'll hope to reduce impaired driving – including drunk and distracted driving, improve seat belt use and crashes by being more visible. The campaign continues through August 1.

The Indiana State Police in Fort Wayne is participating in the High Visibility Enforcement Project based on data provided by Purdue University’s Center for Road Safety and Encompass, that has identified the most dangerous roadways in Indiana from 2010-2012.

According to the data, 53 segments of roadways and intersections have been identified in 18 counties, which have accounted for 418 alcohol-related crashes in Indiana.
