WASHINGTON, Ind. (AP) _ The Southern Indiana Development Commission has identified a site formerly owned by the defunct gasoline pump-maker Tokheim Corp. in Washington as a priority for a $500,000 planning grant from the federal Environmental Protection Agency.

Commission spokesman Greg Jones tells the Washington Times-Herald (http://bit.ly/1hcnLBM ) the agency has put together a committee to prioritize how to spend the grant money it is scheduled to receive Oct. 1.

The brownfield project is looking at targeted properties that either have been contaminated by prior use or are believed to be polluted in Daviess, Martin, Knox, Lawrence and Greene counties. Environmental firms will come onto the properties, assess the level of contamination and put together potential clean-up plans.

The Tokheim site, 60 miles north of Evansville, covers at least 10 acres.
