Fort Wayne Honors First African-American Firefighter

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): Firefighters honored the city's first African-American firefighter yesterday in Fort Wayne.

Richard Ridley, Jr. joined the department in 1961 as the city's first African-American firefighter, and endured years of prejudice within the ranks.

Ridley was awarded the inaugural Pioneer Award, surrounded by friends and family, including his son, who is also a retired firefighter.
