FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): A Fort Wayne Police officer is on paid administrative leave after fatally shooting a man who was armed with a knife.
The Fort Wayne Police Department tells WOWO News officers were called to the Hallmark Inn at East Washington and Coliseum at about 8:50pm Saturday due to a man in the parking lot, armed with a knife, threatening to cut someone.
When officers tried to get the suspect to drop the knife, police say he lunged at officers, prompting them to open fire.
The man fell the the ground, and officers kicked the knife away from the suspect’s hand. They then reportedly tried to administer first aid, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Department says the man seemed to be intoxicated.
Police haven’t yet released the name of either the officer that fired the fatal shot, nor the suspect. The Indiana State Police is running a parallel investigation.
