Gary Man Killed while Walking Across Interstate

GARY, Ind. (AP) – Police say a 54-year-old Gary man was killed when he walked in front of a car on Interstate 80-94 in northwest Indiana.

Indiana State Police say Charles Maguire was struck by several vehicles. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:30 a.m. Saturday.

A 48-year-old woman told police she was driving eastbound in the left middle lane when a passenger shouted someone was walking into their lane. Police did not release the woman's name but say she is from Northville, Michigan.

Police say the woman was unable to stop in time to avoid hitting the man, who landed in the left lane and was run over by several other vehicles.

The eastbound lanes of the highway were closed for about three hours.
