Gary Opens 4 Cooling Centers for City Residents

  GARY, Ind. (AP) _ The city of Gary has opened four cooling centers for residents seeking relief from the heat and humidity.
 
  City spokeswoman Chelsea Whittington says people can go to the Genesis Convention Center, the Hudson Campbell Fitness Center, the Calumet Township Trustee Multipurpose Center or the Public Safety Facility on Polk Street to cool off. The facilities are open 24 hours.
 
  The city also is asking that people check on their neighbors, particularly the elderly, to make sure they are doing all right.
 
  As of noon Central time, the National Weather Service was reporting the temperature in Gary was 86 with 62 percent humidity. In Shelbyville, 30 miles southeast of Indianapolis, it was 92 at 1 p.m. Eastern time.
