Graffiti Artists To Paint Colorful Murals In Gary

GARY, Ind. (AP) _ Graffiti artists from around the Midwest and New York City will be in Gary this weekend to create colorful murals on buildings in the Miller Beach neighborhood.

The Miller Beach Arts and Creative District is partnering with East Chicago artist Ish Muhammad for the second Lake Effekt event on Saturday. Muhammad tells The (Munster) Times (http://bit.ly/1JMEq9g ) that between 17 and 20 pieces will be painted.

District executive director Megan Roman says 600 people showed up last time and she expects higher attendance this year. Roman says several businesses are letting their walls be used as canvases. She says the murals will make art accessible to people and draw attention.

Two artists already have painted a mural on a restaurant in the neighborhood to kick off the event.
