Greenfield Police to Use Drone for Accident Probes

GREENFIELD, Ind. (AP) _ Police in a central Indiana community are turning to a drone to help them document accident scenes.

The Greenfield Police Department has purchased a remote-controlled helicopter with a mount on the bottom to attach a camera.

Chief John Jester tells the Daily Reporter the drone will be used primarily to take aerial photographs and video of accident scenes. But it also could be used in standoff situations or to help firefighters determine where best to attack a blaze.

The drone and camera cost about $1,000. The department hopes to buy another helicopter in the near future.

Jester says the drone will only be used in legally allowed police business. He says the department will develop a manual that addresses misuse of the equipment.
