HOBART, Ind. (AP) – The Indiana Landmarks preservation group says the Hobart Commercial Historic District in northwest Indiana has gained national landmark status.

Hobart's downtown district includes buildings that date back from 1870 through 1950. Hobart Redevelopment Commission Carla Houck told The (Munster) Times (http://bit.ly/1IbMT7t ) the designation means the  downtown district was recognized as having historic value and being worthy of preservation.

The Hobart Redevelopment Commission is hoping the recognition sparks additional improvements to the city's downtown district. The designation makes income-producing properties within the district's boundaries eligible for federal restoration credits.

Mayor Brian Snedecor says representatives of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology will present the National Register certificate at a ceremony at the Indiana State Fair in August.
