AUBURN, Ind. (WOWO) — The Auburn Police Department is investigating a homicide that occurred in the 900 block of Ensley Avenue in Auburn on December 21, 2025.
According to authorities, the incident began when a 74-year-old man, identified as Lonnie Cox, walked into the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office on the morning of December 21 and confessed to killing someone. Cox was immediately detained while officers verified the information and checked the residence where the crime allegedly took place.
Upon arriving at the home in the 900 block of Ensley Avenue, police discovered a deceased adult female on the floor of the residence. The victim, who appeared to have died from gunshot wounds, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her identity has not been released at this time, pending notification of family members and further investigation by the DeKalb County Coroner’s Office.
In interviews with detectives, Cox stated that he had been in a dating relationship with the victim. He told investigators that an argument broke out between them on Saturday, December 20, during which he shot and killed her. Cox also admitted to telling a family member about the incident, and the family member subsequently took him to the sheriff’s office on December 21.
Cox has been preliminarily charged with murder. The DeKalb County Prosecutor’s Office will determine whether additional charges will be filed. As of now, Cox remains in custody with no bond. He appeared before the DeKalb County Superior II Court at 11 a.m. today and is scheduled for his next hearing on February 23, 2026, at 1 p.m.
The Auburn Police Department is being assisted by several agencies, including the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, Indiana State Police, DeKalb County Central Communications, the DeKalb County Coroner’s Office, and the DeKalb County Prosecutor’s Office.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding this tragic event.
