VEEDERSBURG, Ind. (AP): Hundreds of police officers have paid their final respects to a police dog that died from heat exhaustion after chasing three armed robbery suspects.

Officers from around Indiana attended Friday’s funeral for the dog, named Tyson, at Sterling Christian Church in the western Indiana town of Veedersburg.

The police dog for the Fountain County Sheriff’s Department died last month after pursuing the three suspects.

WTHR-TV reports that during the funeral services Sheriff William Sanders told his fellow officers that Tyson “was one of us.”

During the services, officers consoled Tyson’s handler, Deputy Andrew Krout. Sanders says that Krout is taking his canine partner’s death “pretty hard.”

The sheriff says Tyson was Krout’s “backup” and “he was his partner. We depended on him.”
