Indiana Investigates Prisoner’s Mistaken Release

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ The Indiana Department of Corrections is trying to figure out how one of its prisoners was mistakenly released from a county jail in Chicago, where the man was sent to face a drug charge.

Local, state and federal authorities are searching for 44-year-old Steven Robbins.

Robbins is serving a 60-year prison sentence for murder in Indiana but went to Illinois to face a drug charge. That charge was dropped, and the county jail released him even though he was supposed to be returned to Indiana prison officials.

DOC spokesman Douglas Garrison said Friday the department submitted all of the correct paperwork telling Illinois officials that Robbins must be returned to Indiana. Garrison said the DOC doesn’t know yet what happened and that it is investigating Robbins’ release.
