INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (WOWO): A scholarship program to coax more Hoosier students into teaching careers is getting a once-over in the Senate.

The bill would give full tuition to students at the top of their high school classes who agree to teach for five years after college. House Speaker Brian Bosma authored the bill, and sought to reassure the Senate Appropriations Committee there’s no price tag for now. The program would eventually cost $6-million a year, but the bill just starts the process of establishing the rules for the scholarship. Spending commitments would wait for next year’s budget talks.

Bosma credits State Board of Education member Gordon Hendry with proposing the scholarship. Hendry says it would create a pipeline of 200 new teachers a year.

The Senate Appropriations Committee plans to vote on the bill next week.
