OWENSVILLE, Ind. (AP) _ A southwestern Indiana town's water supervisor says the community may need to drill a new well to combat high levels of a potentially dangerous chemical compound found in its water supply.

Owensville Water operator Randy Ross told council members this week that two wells that contain the highest nitrate levels may also need to be closed in the town about 20 miles northwest of Evansville.

Nitrate levels above 10 milligrams per liter can sicken or kill infants younger than 6 months by reducing oxygen levels in their blood.

The Princeton Daily Clarion reports (http://bit.ly/1jeEwhe) Owensville has been working for more than six months on a plan to combat the water supply's high levels of that chemical compound.

Those efforts have included taking wells off line and cleaning and repairing them.
