Indianapolis Officer Fatally Shot, Gunman Killed

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Authorities say an Indianapolis police officer was fatally shot by a gunman who was then killed.

City police Lt. Christopher Bailey says the shooting happened about 2 a.m. Friday at an apartment complex on the city's northwest side after officers were called there for a disturbance.

Bailey says Officer Rod Bradway forced his way into an apartment after hearing a woman scream for help and was shot during a confrontation. He says the gunman was then killed.

Bradway was taken to Wishard Memorial Hospital where he died a short time later.

Police Chief Rick Hite told reporters outside the hospital that Bradway was a brave officer who was acting to save a woman's life.

Indianapolis Fraternal Order of Police president Bill Owensby says Bradway was married with two children.
