CROWN POINT, Ind. (AP) – A jury awarded $32.5 million to a Dyer, Indiana woman who suffered brain damage and left partially paralyzed in a traffic accident.

Kristen Zak was injured Jan. 17, 2006 when the auto she was in skidded on ice on Interstate 65 in Jasper County and slammed into a semi-truck, owned by J. B. Hunt. The truck had jackknifed an hour earlier. 

Attorney Todd Schafer contended the truck's driver had been going too fast for conditions and failed to activate emergency flashers or set out reflective triangles to warn other drivers of the accident.

Schafer said the Lake Superior Court jury late Wednesday assigned 60 percent of the liability for Kristen Zak's injuries to J.B. Hunt and its driver and 40 percent to the driver of the auto she was riding in.

Telephone calls to J.B. Hunt and their attorneys for comment weren't immediately returned.
