Legislators Eye Tweaks to Sentencing Overhaul Law

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Sweeping changes to Indiana sentencing guidelines could see some adjustments before they take effect.

Indiana lawmakers are awaiting results of two studies that examine prison and jail bed space and the costs of sending more low-level offenders to county programs.

Republican state Rep. Greg Steuerwald of Avon tells the South Bend Tribune that lawmakers have to find funding for local governments to handle the influx of offenders.

The Indiana Prosecuting Attorneys Council says the new guidelines create sentencing ranges that are too low for some offenses.

The changes approved last year are the first revisions to the state's criminal code since the 1970s. They are scheduled to take effect in July.
