Man Killed Trying to Help Along I-70

CLOVERDALE, Ind. (AP): State police say a man who was trying to help jump start a disabled SUV was fatally struck when he apparently stepped into a driving lane of Interstate 70 in western Indiana.

Police say 22-year-old John Dugger of Terre Haute died early Tuesday at an Indianapolis hospital after being hit Monday night on the highway in rural Putnam County.

Sgt. Joe Watts says Dugger had stopped to help a couple from Texas whose SUV battery died after they had run out of gasoline and pulled onto the highway's shoulder about 25 miles east of Terre Haute. Watts says it appears Dugger was trying to talk with the SUV's driver when he was hit by another SUV.

Dugger landed on his wife, who suffered a leg injury.
