McDonald’s tests AI drive-thru system ArchIQ at five U.S. locations

The lead off

  • McDonald’s launches test of AI-powered drive-thru system called ArchIQ at five locations
  • The initiative is part of the company’s new brand strategy, McDonald’s NEXT
  • Google technology supports both order-taking and restaurant operations

INDIANAPOLIS, IND. (WOWO) McDonald’s is testing a new artificial intelligence system called ArchIQ to take drive-thru orders at five locations across the United States, the company announced as part of its McDonald’s NEXT brand strategy.

AI system designed for drive-thru orders

The ArchIQ system is designed to handle drive-thru orders without human intervention. According to McDonald’s franchise representatives, the AI has processed over one million transactions in testing, completing roughly 90% of orders without needing to escalate to a person.

The technology aims to maintain both speed and hospitality for customers, according to comments made during the announcement of McDonald’s NEXT by CEO Chris Kempczinski.

Google technology integration

McFranchisee, a representative account for a McDonald’s franchise, stated that Google is providing the underlying technology for ArchIQ, using Google Edge Cloud blades. Every McDonald’s location nationwide is expected to eventually receive this infrastructure as the rollout expands.

In addition to order-taking, ArchIQ is intended to assist restaurant managers by alerting them to potential operational bottlenecks and other issues, acting as a central “personal assistant” for store operations.

Public reaction

Social media responses have been mixed, with many users expressing skepticism about AI replacing human interaction in the drive-thru. Comments have referenced previous customer frustrations with kiosks at McDonald’s and other fast-food chains.

Looking ahead

McDonald’s has not specified a timeline for a nationwide rollout. The company continues to monitor the performance of ArchIQ in the test stores and assess how the AI system impacts customer experience and restaurant operations.

The takeaway

AI technology begins testing in fast-food service

ArchIQ has been installed at five U.S. McDonald’s locations to assist with drive-thru ordering and restaurant management. The system is currently completing the majority of orders without human escalation.

McDonald’s NEXT strategy integrates innovation

The company’s new brand strategy emphasizes efficiency and customer experience, with AI technology serving as a key component of both operational management and customer service.

Expansion plans expected

Google’s Edge Cloud technology will eventually be installed at all McDonald’s locations nationwide, supporting a future where AI assists with order-taking and operational oversight, pending results from ongoing tests.
