Milford man gets 15 years in jail for causing death while driving high

WARSAW, Ind. (WOWO): A Milford man was sentenced to 15 years in prison for a deadly crash he was involved in while he had marijuana in his system.

Scott Wilkins, 36, had a week-long jury trial in February for causing the death of Kami Ellis, 27, of Nappanee on Dec. 29 of 2014.

Wilkins was sentenced on Wednesday and spoke in court for the first time during the sentencing. He explained that as a father he couldn’t imagine how losing a child could impact a family.

Wilkins was on probation during the time of the accident for drunk driving charges in Elkhart County.

He will serve the sentence after finishing a jail sentence in Elkhart. However, Wilkins implied in court that he will appeal his conviction and sentence.  He also received a 16 year driver’s license suspension.
