Near-Drowning After Two Toddlers Leave Home

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): Saturday morning, Fort Wayne Police were called to Reed Rd. near St. Joe Center Rd. in reference to a child neglect call. A person called police saying two toddlers showed up at his front door and that they pointed toward Fountain Lakes Apartments. The man told police he believed that's where they lived and said the two children started to walk back toward the apartments, so he began following them but stopped when the children seemed afraid of him. Police began looking for the two, and eventually an officer saw a child standing inside the pool area at the apartment complex and then saw a child in the pool. Officers pulled the child from the pool and applied a few quick compressions to his chest. The child was taken to Parkview Hospital, where he was last listed in serious but stable condition. A man showed up to the scene and told police his girlfriend was missing her two young children. An officer went with the man and the other toddler back to their apartment. A representative from the Department of Child Services showed up at the scene. The man told police that he and his girlfriend put the two to bed Friday night and woke up Saturday morning finding the rear patio sliding door open. He said the door was shut and locked the night before.
