Ohio Turnpike Issues High-Wind Travel Ban For High-Profile Vehicles Ahead Of Holiday Storm

BEREA, Ohio. (WOWO) — The Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission has issued a high-wind travel ban for all high-profile vehicles across the 241-mile toll road beginning 8 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 26, and lasting through 11:59 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 27, as strong winds, rain and snow are expected to impact northern Ohio during the busy holiday travel period.

The restriction applies to any vehicle exceeding 7 feet, 6 inches in height and is being enacted to reduce crash risks during the storm.

Vehicles Prohibited During the Ban

The following types of vehicles will not be permitted on the turnpike until the restriction expires or is lifted:

  • High-profile tow-behind trailers, campers, boats and enclosed trailers (excluding fifth-wheel trailers)

  • Commercial trucks towing empty single 53-foot trailers

  • Mobile homes, office trailers, and livestock trailers

  • Long Combination Vehicles (LCVs) with double-trailer setups exceeding 90 feet in length, including enclosed and Conestoga-type trailers

  • LCV triple-trailer combinations

  • Two-axle buses longer than 40 feet

  • Buses with three or more axles longer than 45 feet.

Vehicles Allowed to Travel

The following vehicles may continue to operate on the turnpike during the ban:

  • Self-propelled motor homes

  • Low-profile trailers

  • Fold-down camper trailers

  • Pickup trucks with slide-on camper units

  • Passenger vehicles or pickups towing fifth-wheel or other trailer types

  • Commercial trucks towing single flatbed or box-type trailers

  • Commercial trucks towing loaded single 53-foot trailers

  • Commercial trucks towing car-hauler trailers

  • Commercial trucks towing flatbed double-trailer combinations longer than 90 feet

  • Commercial trucks towing any double-trailer combinations under 90 feet

  • Two-axle buses under 40 feet

  • Buses with three or more axles under 45 feet

Commission officials say the ban will be monitored and updated as conditions evolve throughout the storm.
