Police Find Infant’s Body Inside a Trash Bin

MISHAWAKA, Ind. (AP) _ Police in northern Indiana found an infant's body inside a restaurant trash bin after a woman showed up at a hospital having given birth.

St. Joseph County police say the infant was dead when found inside a bag late Saturday in the trash bin outside a Mishawaka shopping plaza. An autopsy was planned for Monday to determine whether the infant was born alive.

Sgt. William Redman tells WSBT-TV and WNDU-TV that the woman apparently gave birth at her family's home in a nearby Granger neighborhood. She later went to the emergency room at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, where the medical staff contacted police and the search for the infant began.

Redman says the woman is being treated at the hospital and that no arrests were immediately made.
