Presidential Hopeful O’Malley Has Motherly Ties to Fort Wayne

NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. (WOWO): Democratic Presidential Hopeful Martin O'Malley may be known in Maryland politics, but his mother was born and raised in Fort Wayne.

Barbara O'Malley, then known as Barbara Suelzer, graduated from Central Catholic High School and went to Washington D.C. to work for former Third District Democratic Congressman Ed Kruse.

When Kruse lost after his first term in office in 1950, the future Barbara O'Malley returned to Fort Wayne before heading back to Washington to work for the national Democratic party. That's where she met her future husband Thomas O'Malley.

Barbara O'Malley told the Journal-Gazette that she hasn't been in Fort Wayne in over 20 years, but she still tries to keep up with her hometown through the internet.

Her son Martin announced his Presidential candidacy on Saturday.</p>
