JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. (AP): A quarterly report from the Indiana Department for Environmental Management shows water contamination levels where more than 1,250 people work at a U.S. Census Bureau facility have increased above federal limits.

The Courier-Journal reports the level of tetrachloroethylene, most commonly used in dry cleaning, spiked to 8 parts per billion in July, well above the 5 ppb limit listed as the federal maximum contaminant level. It was 5.5 ppb in April.

A Sept. 10 report from Illinois-based Environmental Consulting Group Inc. shows much higher levels — up to 870 ppb — in a groundwater-monitoring well installed last year.

Since the state ordered the Census Bureau to correct its contaminated water supply last year, it started a transition to Indiana American Water Co. supply lines from its current well.
