Road Improvement Plans Already in the Works

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) – Several projects are in the works to improve Allen County’s roads.

Monday afternoon, the Northeastern Indiana Regional Coordinating Council (NIRCC) held an open house showing off all the plans to improve local transportation.

NIRCC Executive Director Dan Avery says that includes transit, highway, pedestrian and bicycle projects that’ll be implemented now and 20 years from now.

“It’s our hope that it makes for a safer, more efficient transportation system whether you use transit, ride your bike, or drive your car,” said Avery.

Some of the proposed ideas include widening and realigning roads, as well as extending transit services to urban areas. Avery says improving State Blvd. and Maplecrest Rd. are just a couple of several projects already in the works.

“Some of the primary challenges are older roadways that haven’t been improved for a number of years. Capacity is insufficient to handle the travel load that we’re putting on the streets right now,” he said. “We’re seeing some areas of fairly rapid growth to the North within the urban area, so we’re trying to keep up with the development.”

Project plans and materials are available at the NIRCC office and on their website at nircc.com. The NIRCC will accept public comments and feedback through March 31.
