UPDATED: Fatal crash closes portion of I-69, victims identified

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): A crash that killed two people left a portion of Interstate 69 in Fort Wayne shut down early Saturday.

According to the Fort Wayne Police Department, it happened on northbound I-69 at the northbound Lima Road exit at about 12:09am, when two northbound vehicles collided for still unknown reasons. One vehicle was resting on its roof.

When police arrived they found two victims dead at the scene, and two more badly injured. They were both taken to a nearby hospital. One is reportedly in critical condition, the other in serious condition.

The two victims killed in the crash were later identified as Tashan Godwin, 20 of South Bend, Indiana, and Aaron Porter II, 20 of Marion, Illinois.

Godwin’s cause of death was determined to be multiple blunt force injuries due to the crash. Porter’s cause of death was blunt force injuries of the head due to the crash.

Both Godwin and Porter’s manner of death was ruled an accident. They are the 23rd and 24th fatalities from motor vehicle crashes in Allen County this year.

Investigators with the Fort Wayne Police Department’s F.A.C.T Team are still working to determine how the crash occurred. Traffic was detoured onto the southbound Lima Road exit while police worked on the scene. 

 I-69 reopened to all traffic at about 5:30am.
