Woman Charged Over Son’s School Absences

DUNKIRK, Ind. (AP): An eastern Indiana woman has been arrested on a criminal charge alleging her teenage son has missed at least 95 days of classes this school year.

The 40-year-old Dunkirk woman faces a felony charge of neglect of a dependent and is scheduled to appear before a Jay County judge next week.

The Star Press reports court documents say her 16-year-old son missed all 42 days of the second nine-week grading period at Jay County High School. Authorities say he had missed 95 of 119 days this school year as of March 7 and that all were unexcused absences.

Court documents says automated calls were placed to their home each day the teen wasn't at school, and that responses weren't received to several telephone calls and letters about the absences.
