Cancelled Schools Can Apply for Make-Up Day Waiver

INDIANA, (WOWO): Classrooms were empty all across the state of Indiana on Monday, and it appears schools will NOT have to make that day up.

State Superintendent Glenda Ritz says Tuesday’s school closings will be eligible for the waiver.

That’s because Ritz authorized schools yesterday to apply for a one-day waiver from the required 180-days. Ritz says weather conditions across the state were extremely dangerous for students, justifying her decision.

These waivers don't get used very often, with only three other instances in the last 15 years. The waiver allows schools to avoid the severe financial penalties associated with canceling school.
