Evansville Man Pleads Guilty in 2014 Shooting, Robbery

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) _ An Evansville man has pleaded guilty to attempted murder and other charges tied to a March 2014 shooting and robbery.

The Evansville Courier & Press reports a trial was set to open Monday, but 25-year-old Lanico C. Payne instead pleaded guilty. He's one of two men charged in connection with the shooting in Evansville.

The other man, Todd D. Covington Jr., was convicted and sentenced to a 75-year prison term last year. Police say the victim survived despite being shot multiple times, including twice in the head.

Payne could get a prison sentence between 20 and 30 years, per the terms of a plea agreement. His attorney, Barry Blackard, says he expects several witnesses will testify at the sentencing.
