INDIANA (WOWO): Union Pacific Railroad is bringing its legendary “Big Boy” steam locomotive through Indiana this week as part of a nationwide tour celebrating the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States.

The massive locomotive, known as Big Boy No. 4014, is traveling coast-to-coast with more than 50 stops planned across 10 states.

The engine is recognized as the world’s largest operating steam locomotive, weighing roughly 1.2 million pounds. Originally built during World War II to haul heavy freight through the mountains of the American West, the locomotive was restored by Union Pacific and returned to service in recent years.

On Friday, June 5, the train is scheduled to stop in Argos at 2:30 p.m. That stop will be open to the public, allowing visitors to view the locomotive up close.

The train will then continue east through northern Indiana, including a planned pass through Fort Wayne. While the locomotive is expected to be visible as it moves through Allen County, Union Pacific says the Fort Wayne stop itself will not be open for public access.

The tour is part of the railroad’s broader celebration leading up to America’s semiquincentennial in 2026.
