INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Lawyers will soon be able to file documents electronically to Indiana courts.
The state Supreme Court announced the move Thursday.
The change brings the court in line not only with automatic payroll deposits and other payments, but with the federal courts, which operates their own online filing system.
E-filing will be able to be done not only at the appellate court level, but with county clerks across the state, who currently accept documents on paper. Citizens and lawyers will be able to file documents 24 hours a day instead of waiting for office hours.
The state says the change will increase effectiveness and save money. Bidding competition is expected to keep fees for using the system relatively low.
The e-filing system is expected to begin in phases starting next year.
