Local Nurse Accused of Stealing Narcotics from Dispensing Machine

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): A nurse faces charges for taking narcotics from an automated dispensing machine.

According to the Journal Gazette, 32-year-old Rebecca Koontz faces five counts of possession of a narcotic drug after she told a Medicaid fraud investigator she was lifting narcotics from the automated dispensing machine.

Koontz was charged Monday in Allen Superior Court. A chief nursing officer at a local hospital contacted a Medicaid fraud investigator to say an employee was taking morphine and hydromorphone from a dispensing machine without a doctor's order.

Court documents say the medications were taken from the machine on November 30th and December 1st of last year, but the drugs were never administered to patients.

During questioning, Koontz said she had been taking the medications from the Acudose station for personal use and that she needed help, according to the Journal Gazette.

The Indiana Nursing Board reported Koontz is a licensed registered nurse.
